Facetime VS Google Duo | Which is better?

In the modern era of videotelephony, physical distance is no longer a barrier in communication. As the world evolves the variety of video calling apps ensures your loved ones are never too far. Two of the leading video calling apps right now- Google Duo from Google and FaceTime for pc from Apple Inc are quite a long way ahead of their competitions. But if asked to compare, how do they stack up against one another.

Benefits of FaceTime

Video calling Quality

The highlight of FaceTime has to be the crisp and clear quality of the video. The application can support up to 720p of resolution. This ensures that the video calling experience is never compromised.

Easy to use

The application is fairly straight forward to use. The users need to proceed by entering their Apple ID. Thereafter the process is fairly simple and you call someone as you would do for a normal phone call.

Interface- FaceTime has also focussed heavily on the interface of their app. Their elegant interface evidently prioritizes aesthetic felling to improve the user experience. On top of that, the application also allows you to receive a call when the app is not active. The users further have the option to use the app in landscape or portrait mode according to their convenience. The options to share animoji, stickers, and live pictures also improve the intimacy of the app.

Disadvantages of FaceTime

Exclusivity

This is the major downside of the app. FaceTime is a video calling app exclusively for iOS platform. That means unless the person on the other side is an Apple user, it is likely you won’t be able to connect with him/her via this app.

Lack of Versatility

The application does not offer anything much different to their competitors. The features available are not radically different while most of its popularity is down to its availability on Apple devices.

Benefits of Google Duo

Video Quality

Much like its competitor, Google Duo ensures superior quality video calling. The video remains sharp throughout the call while the user also gets to enjoy an uninterrupted calling experience. Moreover, Duo uses AI to optimize the sound during a call for its users.

Interface

The interface again for Google Duo is precise and simple. The big and wide icons are fairly easy to recognize for a first time user. It allows the user to begin the call by simply dialing the number of the person they want to call and provide a recently dialed list. And if you prefer, you can also take a snapshot of the moment just by clicking a button. Google Duo also let us host a conference call with a cap set at 12 people.

Features- When it comes to innovation, Google Duo is quite a few steps ahead of other video calling apps. One of the most appealing features of the app is the “Knock Knock”. This allows you to get a glimpse of the real time actions of your caller even before you accept the call. Although that might be a bit creepy for some, Google aims to provide a more spontaneous environment for its users. Similarly, the app also allows you to send video messages to anyone on your contact list.

Disadvantages of Google Duo

Heavy Data Usage

The high quality video calling experience from Google Duo is going to prove costly for you. If used by using mobile data, the high data usage of the app is certain to wipe off a chunk from your data plan.

Simple & Easy to use

Despite its features, the app has one distinct approach- video calling. So if a user is looking to have a all-in-one app, Google Duo is not the application for that.

Conclusion

So which app is better? As anti-climactic as it might sound, the choice is entirely up on the user. If compared side by side, Google Duo does not look to do anything more than what FaceTime does. They both have their objectives set on providing a superior video calling app and both lands perfectly on their target. However one point where Google Duo edges FaceTiime is that it is supported on both iOS and Android. All you need is the phone number of the person you intend to call. But that does not mean Apple users need to shift from FaceTime. Both the competitors have created an app which the user won’t have much to complain about.

Facetime for Android | Best Alternatives for Facetime

Want to use Facetime for android or Windows

Sadly, facetime is not available on android. But don’t worry.

Facetime Not Working? | How to fix facetime?

FaceTime is a video/audio messaging app designed by Apple, which helps to enjoy our long-distance social/formal interactions with ease. With a promise to deliver the utmost convenience to its customers, Apple regularly updates FaceTime with useful features, which makes our lives a little easier. But unlike any other app, it is bound to give you trouble.

Though it is quite rare, there may be some instances when FaceTime is unable to function smoothly on your iOS device. Either there is a server issue or it just keeps crashing, period. if you are planning to use facetime on PC, check out our guide facetime for windows.

Why my FaceTime is not working?

A problem is an uninvited guest and apps are no stranger to it. If FaceTime on your device is not functional, there are a list of 10 checks that you can do to get it started. Let’s take a look at it.

Apple is to blame

Log on to Apple System Status site to check whether the company has mentioned anything about updating the FaceTime servers. If you find something positive related to it, you have to wait a while because the server is down. You can’t access FaceTime till the company is done with its work and the servers are back online.

Check internet connection

FaceTime requires a stable internet connection and without it, the app won’t function. So, check your WiFi or mobile data connection. Make sure that your WiFi router is working properly. In the case of a mobile data connection, remember to turn on ‘Use Mobile Data’ for FaceTime.

Software update

Many people don’t like to update the software on their devices because of slowdowns. But there is one thing that they need to remember. Apple brings out new software updates for its devices. In that, it releases bug fixes/new features for FaceTime as well. If your device is not running the latest iOS update, there are high chances that FaceTime won’t work. So, make sure to frequently update your iOS devices.

FaceTime should be ON

If you have tried the above steps and FaceTime is not working, just go to the settings on the iOS device and tap on FaceTime. See whether it is activated on your device. If not, switch it on.

Correct Apple id

FaceTime works with the help of an Apple id. In case you have entered the wrong id, FaceTime will not work. On an iOS device, go to settings -> FaceTime -> check the id. If you want to change the id, click on sign out and enter the new one.

FaceTime won’t activate

When you buy a new iOS device and log on to FaceTime, it will display ‘Waiting for activation’. If it is stuck on it, switch it off and turn it back on. This will sort the issue.

Correct contact details

Many people complain that they are unable to get FaceTime calls on their devices. Well, there is an obvious solution to it. Go to FaceTime settings and check the details provided under ‘You can be reached by FaceTime at’. Make the changes if required. Remember to share the correct contact details with the person who is trying to contact you.

Go through the blocked list-

When you log on to FaceTime settings, you will see an option ‘blocked contacts’. Check out the list for the name of the person who is trying to contact you. If (s)he is accidentally a part of the list, click on edit -> click on ‘Remove’ -> press ‘Unblock’.

FaceTime can’t be installed

In 2020, there are still a few countries where FaceTime is not available/activated. For example, if you purchase an iOS device from Pakistan, FaceTime won’t function. So, plan your purchases accordingly.

Just restart Facetime

We turn to the restart option when nothing else works. It refreshes the software and wipes away any code that is not in line. Most of the time, it helps to sort out the FaceTime issue.

If FaceTime on your device is not working (even after following the above checks), it is time to book an appointment with the Apple officials.

If facetime still does work and you have to make a video call. You can go for other facetime alternatives.

Facetime Vs Whatsapp: Which is better?

No matter what social media application you use, even if its Facetime or Whatsapp or any such similar application, they all are a good way to have a chit chat with your loved ones irrespective of how far away they are from you. Currently, there are endless numbers of such applications making it even more difficult to choose one or rather stick to one. Don’t worry, we will help you narrow down your options.  Service, Quality, number of people using these applications, data consumption, features, etc. are a few of many factors that will help you decide the application for you.

Facetime vs whatsapp

Let’s get down straight to the point, and start comparing Facetime and Whatsapp.

Device Compatibility

We can’t ignore the fact that Facetime can only be used in apple products like iphones, ipads or Mac Books. It means that both the caller and the receiver have to be mandatorily using apple product.

Whereas one can use Whatsapp in every OS, be it be Windows PC, Windows Phone, Linux, Android, Apple OS. And also, in order to connect using Whatsapp application, caller and receiver need not be using the same operating system, for an instance, Mr. Alpha, using a  iOS device can contact Mr. Victor Using an Android device.

This clearly means that number of Whatsapp user is way more than the number Facetime users. More the users, the merrier the application.

Sharing of Files, Images, Videos, Voice Notes etc.

Unlike Facetime, apart from the basic feature of text chat, voice call, video call, Whatsapp allows us to share documents, images, videos, music files, location, live location, voice notes, etc. which makes it a more resourceful application. Whatsapp even allows setting up text status, video status on your profile.

Number of simultaneous Connection

Facetime allows only one connection to be made at a time, for an instance if you are using a Facetime ID on your iPhone, you cannot use the same ID in your MacBook at the same time.

On the other hand, if you are using a Whatsapp ID on your Smartphone, you can use the same ID at the same time on your laptop using the Whatsapp web option.

This means that if you want to share any media or document from your PC / Laptop you can use Whatsapp. It won’t be wrong to say that Whatsapp has the ability to one day replace the conventional mailing applications.

Group Calling / Group Video Chat

In this era of social distancing, owing to the COVID outbreak, Whatsapp and Facetime both allow you to easily connect with your friends and family using the group video call feature, it even allows group audio call. Whatsapp only allows a maximum of eight users to enter a group call which is one fourth of the number allowed by Facetime i.e. Facetime allows 32 user to enter a group call.

SIM Card Requirement

Once you activate your iPhone Facetime can be used when you have an active internet connection, irrespective of whether your SIM card is data or cellular, or even if you don’t have a  SIM card.

Whereas, in order to activate the Whatsapp application you need a SIM card and a phone number. But, after your WhatsApp is activated, you can use it on other devices with or without the SIM card.

Delete Message Options

Delete for everyone option allows Whatsapp users to unsend / delete a message even after its sent i.e the receiver won’t be able to see / read the message once it is deleted by the sender.

Whereas in Facetime, there is no way to unsend / delete a text message once it sent. There are a few third party applications that allow you to unsend the text messages but with a few limitations. We’ll talk about those applications some other time.

Cost of Application

Both Facetime and Whatsapp are completely free of cost. They don’t charge you anything to use these applications. Also, both the applications are add free, i.e. you won’t be irritated by the unwanted advertisements every now and then.

Number of Users

There are around 1500 million Whatsapp users across the globe, almost double the number of Facetime users, i.e. 730 million users. And as already discussed, the more the users, the merrier the application.

Secure Connection

Whatsapp messages are end to end encrypted which indeed is a great security feature. Facetime also uses latest and more evolved encryption algorithms, in addition to this Facetime can only be used on iOS devices which even adds on to the security. Although both the applications are secure, but we will give a thumbs up to Facetime if it comes to making secure connections.

Conclusion

In my opinion, there would hardly be any Smartphone user, who is not using or has not used Whatsapp application. It is one of the best applications used to connect to your near and dear ones. It has won billions of hearts and the number is increasing while you are reading this. Whatsapp Clearly is the winner here. But before choosing the one for you, go through the aforementioned points and compare it with your need.
